How to clean tumble dryer filters and vents

Keeping your tumble dryer clean isn’t just about hygiene – it’s essential for safety and energy efficiency too. Over time, fluff, dust, and fibres can build up in the filter and internal vents, reducing airflow and making your dryer work harder than it should.

Not only does this increase running costs, but it also slows down drying time and, in some cases, can lead to overheating or faults. That’s why learning how to clean a tumble dryer filter – and where the filter is located – is such a key part of regular maintenance.

This guide will take you through the steps for cleaning both standard and condenser tumble dryer filters, as well as how to maintain vents, improve efficiency and avoid common issues.

Where is the filter on a tumble dryer?

On most tumble dryers, the lint filter is located just inside the door, usually in or around the door rim or just below it. Open the door, and you should see a pull-out filter that lifts out easily by hand.

Some models, especially condenser or heat pump dryers, also have a secondary filter located near the base of the machine. This helps catch any finer dust particles before they reach the condenser unit.

Always check your appliance manual if you’re unsure – but for most dryers, these filters are simple to access and easy to remove.

How to clean a tumble dryer filter

Cleaning your tumble dryer filter should be done after every drying cycle. Even if the lint looks minimal, regular cleaning prevents gradual build-up and keeps your dryer running smoothly.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:

 Step 1: Remove the filter

Open the dryer door and carefully lift out the filter from its housing. Some filters fold open or pull apart into two sections – if so, open both layers so you can clean thoroughly.

Step 2: Remove lint by hand

Use your fingers or a soft brush to gently remove lint, fluff and hair from the mesh. Be thorough, as even small bits of debris can reduce airflow.

Step 3: Wash the filter (if needed)

If your filter has a lot of build-up or has become greasy (which is common with fabric softeners), you might be wondering whether it’s okay to wash it.

Luckily, most tumble dryer filters can be rinsed under warm water. Use a soft brush or sponge to remove stubborn residue. Just make sure the filter is completely dry before putting it back into the machine.

Step 4: Reinsert the filter

Once clean and dry, slot the filter back into place. Never run your dryer without it – doing so can allow lint to enter the machine and cause internal blockages.

How to clean a condenser tumble dryer filter

If you have a condenser dryer, there’s usually a second filter or mesh screen located near the bottom of the machine, just in front of the condenser unit. This helps trap additional fibres and protect the internal components.

Here’s how to clean a condenser tumble dryer filter:

  • Open the access panel near the bottom of the appliance
  • Remove the secondary filter or grille
  • Clean off any fluff or residue using your hands or a soft brush
  • If it’s washable, rinse under warm water and dry thoroughly
  • Reinsert the filter and close the panel securely

Some condenser dryers also have a water tank that needs to be emptied regularly. Keep this clear to avoid interruptions during your drying cycle.

How to clean tumble dryer vents

If your dryer is vented rather than condenser or heat pump, it will push hot air out through a vent hose, usually leading to an outside wall or window. Over time, these vents can collect dust and lint, too.

Step 1: Disconnect the dryer

Unplug your dryer and gently detach the vent hose from the back. If it’s clamped, loosen the clamp using a screwdriver.

Step 2: Vacuum inside the hose

Use a vacuum with a narrow nozzle to suck out any lint or dust from inside the hose. If possible, clean inside the wall or window vent too.

Step 3: Check airflow

Before reattaching the hose, make sure it’s not kinked or crushed. Good airflow is essential for safe and efficient drying.

Step 4: Reconnect everything securely

Once clean, reconnect the hose and plug the appliance back in.

For peace of mind, we recommend cleaning your dryer vents every 3–6 months depending on how often it’s used. A blocked vent can significantly impact performance and even become a fire hazard over time.

Tumble dryer filter cleaning tips

To keep your tumble dryer clean and performing at its best, you should:

  • Clean the main lint filter after every cycle
  • Rinse washable filters once a month (or as needed), and dry fully before replacing
  • Vacuum around the filter housing to remove any fluff that escapes the mesh
  • Clean condenser filters and water tanks regularly on condenser or heat pump models
  • Check vent hoses and external ducts every few months to avoid blockages

Regular maintenance won’t just keep your appliance in top condition – it’ll also help your clothes dry faster and your energy bills stay lower.
